Some new features include:

New design

In ownCloud 5, the main navigation was redesigned to clearly differentiate it from the in-app navigations. This also allows the app more room and gives a better focus on the content of ownCloud directories.

Settings and Log-out menus are combined into a user menu on the top right, which also shows the currently logged in user and makes it more intuitive to use. The settings are further simplified and app-specific settings are moved from personal settings into the relevant apps.

To help people get their data synchronized, there is a new first run page linking the desktop and mobile apps as well as documentation on how to sync contacts and calendars. This info is also displayed in the personal settings – and makes getting started with ownCloud much easier for a user.

Deleted files

Finally, now users can undelete a file that was accidentally deleted through the web interface. Simply select the files in the "Deleted files" and they are returned to where they were deleted from, with versions maintained.

New search engine

A new Lucene-based full text search engine app is added. People can use the search to not only find files by name but also by content. Scanning is done in the background to ensure a responsive user experience for the users. This searches PDFs and text files at the moment only.

New photo gallery

ownCloud 5 contains an improved and rewritten photo gallery. It has a streamlined user interface with a slideshow feature. Photo galleries can also be shared with others.

Thanks as always to a great community effort, we expect to launch GA in the next couple weeks. Thanks a lot for everybody who contributed. Please note that this is not ready for production, but if you want to help with testing and bugfixing or want a preview then give it a try.

    So exciting! Does this release include the encryption system?

    • Holger

      We are putting some additional touches into it currently. It might be delivered some weeks later, prior or with ownCloud 5 Enterprise.

  2. Rico

    Is an upgrade from 4.5.6 possible in the usual way (copy config and data), or more to consider?

  3. Rico

    Unfortunately I ran into some errors. After the “will be updated…takes some time” and owncloud being in maintanace mode, it does not leave that mode (after a reasonable time).
    Log shows some issues (I do not have any 3rd party app activated):
    {“app”:”core”,”message”:”App \”\” can’t be used because it is not compatible with this version of ownCloud”,”level”:3,”time”:1339143066}
    {“app”:”core”,”message”:”Archives of type are not supported”,”level”:3,”time”:1339143177}
    {“app”:”core”,”message”:”App can’t be installed because it is not compatible with this version of ownCloud”,”level”:3,”time”:1343976788}
    {“app”:”core”,”message”:”setting locale to en_US.UTF-8\/en_US.UTF8 failed. Support is probably not installed on your system”,”level”:3,”time”:1361971156}
    {“app”:”hook”,”message”:”error while running hook (\\OC\\Files\\Storage\\Shared::setup): SQLSTATE[42S02]: Base table or view not found: 1146 Table ‘cloudy.oc_filecache’ doesn’t exist”,”level”:3,”time”:1361971156}

    [error] [client] client denied by server configuration: /var/www/owncloud/data/htaccesstest.txt
    [error] [client] File does not exist: /var/www/core

    Last message is true, since owncloud is installed in /var/www/owncloud/

    Awesome work guys, really appreciate this project and support it 100% Any chance of posting some screenshots of the new interface?

    • Holger

      Yes, this will happen as part of the ownCloud 5 Enterprise announcement. Till then the community might display some at owncloud.org.

  5. I have had some problems with my ownCloud installation becoming unresponsive when you are moving a large folder to somewhere else, or when opening a movie in ownCloud.

    Are these problems fixed in ownCloud 5?

    Also, I would like that every user on ownCloud uses https, will there be an option or will that be coming later?

    • Holger

      Please help test if the issues are away – if not – please file a detailed issue report!
      Connect only through https can be configured in Apache/IIS, that is outside of ownCloud. Of course as part of a subscription we do help with such related issues as well.

  6. Rico

    Nope, rolled-backl.

  7. Ive tried a number of installs on freebsd, using both lighttp and apache2 and i cant seem to get the local storage app to work.

  8. bird

    Yes, as Tina asks: Encryption system.

    It is discussed here in the forum:

    Could any of the developers give some statement on that as discussed in the forum?

    Thank you

    • Holger

      The server-side encryption is delayed, sorry for that. It is planned on our road to an ownCloud 5 Enterprise release and will be delivered as maintenance update.

  9. Spyder

    hey guys,
    I am seeing this following error message while on 5.0.6.
    I thought maybe i did not have en_US.UTF-8 enabled, so i had configured that on my system, but i am still seeing the error.

    {“app”:”core”,”message”:”setting locale to en_US.UTF-8\/en_US.UTF8 failed. Support is probably not installed on your system”,”level”:3,”time”:1371732968}

    I also noticed that my loglevel is not according to my configuration. I had it set to level 0, but it still indicates 3 in the log. Do I have to restart something? (trying to avoid a reboot).

    Let me know if you guys think setting the locale with utf-8 is the resolution to my problem as well.

    • Holger

      Sorry, we can’t provide technical help here. Please work with the community in the forums or file a detailed issue at github.com/owncloud. It will be important to report on the latest version (as of today 5.0.7). Thanks for your support!
