Technical Documentation Writer

ownCloud is an open-source file sharing software designed and built to give businesses and individuals control over their data and sovereign workspaces. With a team of more than 70 people, we develop the ownCloud server, the sync clients, our mobile apps and the web interface to enable secure and effective file collaboration across companies, organizations, administrations, institutions and families. We also implement customized solutions for enterprises and directly manage and maintain ownCloud instances. As a Technical Documentation Writer (m/f/d) at ownCloud you will support our product and engineering team in making ownCloud accessible to community and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive documentation that answers all questions ownCloud users and administrators might have
  • Obtain a deep understanding of the product. Be technical enough to install and maintain ownCloud versions for examination
  • Translate complex product information into simple yet information rich, polished, and engaging content
  • Work with internal support, customer service and development to get all the relevant information
  • Engage with the open source community around ownCloud and influence the community efforts
  • Evaluate current content and maintain and improve it as needed

 

Your core competencies

  • Research, outline, write, and edit new and existing content, working closely with all involved parties
  • Independently gather information from subject matter experts to develop, organize, and write procedure manuals, technical specifications, and process documentation
  • Work with product management  and technical staff identify all documentation repositories, revise and edit, and determine the best solution for data compilation and centralized storage
  • Use the existing asciidoc based documentation system

Skills and qualifications

  • At least two years industry experience as an effective technical writer in the IT environment
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and understand complex topics
  • Previous experience writing documentation and procedural materials for multiple audiences
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, fluent in English, with a keen eye for detail
