Today, we released the BETA of ownCloud 7 Community Edition, which provides even finer grain controls for protecting data while at the same time simplifying deployment, set up and use of ownCloud – not to mention some great new end user features!

You can get a lot of information from the release, and also here, but I’m most excited about the server-to-server sharing. Server to server sharing is potentially a game changer, giving groups of private clouds all the attributes of a public cloud, but without the security and privacy risks, and some of the other public cloud concerns. Watch this space for even more details on this.

Announcing the BETA so publicly gives us – and the community — a chance to test the code for a few more weeks, leading to a much more solid product. After we release the final version sometime in July, ownCloud, Inc. will take a few months to further harden the code, add some Enterprise-only features, further documentation and testing and then launch the commercially-supported Enterprise Edition sometime in the third quarter of 2014 — targeting enterprise IT departments that require on-premise file sync and share for sensitive corporate data.

We’ll be talking individually here about some of the more enterprise-relevant features over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
