The story has gained national infamy in the US as the country tries to come to grips with either defending a monster, or defending invasion of privacy.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t think it\u2019s either\/or. It is obviously repellent to all of us what this man was \u201ccollecting\u201d. But knowing what Google \u2013 and other cloud providers \u2013 can do with our data, is frightening in its own right, especially for organizations with sensitive data.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just Google \u2013 remember\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/31\/judge-rules-that-microsoft-must-turn-over-data-stored-in-ireland\/?_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judge Rules That Microsoft Must Turn Over Data Stored in Ireland<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/microsoft_corporation\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0suffered a setback in its efforts to block federal prosecutors from seizing a customer\u2019s data that is stored overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Loretta A. Preska of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on Thursday upheld a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/11\/technology\/microsoft-protests-order-for-email-stored-abroad.htmlhttp:\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magistrate judge\u2019s ruling<\/a>\u00a0that Microsoft\u00a0<strong>must turn over the customer\u2019s emails, held in a Microsoft data center in Ireland.<\/strong>\u00a0Big technology companies have rallied around Microsoft in the case, seeing the ruling as a potential threat to their plans to offer cloud computing services overseas.<\/p>\n<p>So even when cloud companies don\u2019t want to turn over data \u2013 they can be compelled to. We\u2019ve written about the lack of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.owncloud.com\/us-judge-cloud-providers-give-us-customers-data-wherever-really\/\">safe harbor<\/a>\u00a0before.<\/p>\n<p>This is no surprise to many of us of course. It\u2019s all there in the voluminous T\u2019s and C\u2019s of Facebook, Google, Dropbox. Our data is not our own. Our data lives forever \u2013 our data is out of our control.<\/p>\n<p>And that might be ok for your vacation photos, or your personal email. But what about that research project at CERN? What about your University\u2019s tests and term papers and grades?
