\"Cloud<\/a>If anyone was watching the news this weekend \u2013 even with one eye open \u2013 you\u2019d have noticed a ton of troubling news on data privacy. Each story would have merited a blog of its own, but with so many coming as they did in just the last few days\u2026.<\/p>\n

First \u2013 let\u2019s get to the story that made the most headlines. SHOCK \u2013\u00a0Snapchat<\/a>\u00a0photos were saved on a server (by the users themselves as it turned out), and someone hacked them. I know this is consumers \u2013 and that the Snapchat demographic runs very young \u2014 but it\u2019s good to remember, once on the internet, always on the internet. We are seeing that over and over again. Why risk sensitive data in a public cloud? Hell, why risk any file to the public cloud?<\/p>\n

Speaking of which\u2026<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a little ditty on\u00a0Dropbox<\/a>. Yep, they were hacked \u2013 nearly 7 million passwords hacked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hackers promise to release more accounts in return for Bitcoin donations. The hackers claim to have over 6.9 million email addresses and passwords belonging to Dropbox users.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, this was not\u00a0Dropbox<\/a>\u00a0that was hacked (they say) but a third-party app, the users themselves choose to use to access and store their files.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs with the Snapchat hack, Dropbox has pointed the finger of blame for the 400 compromised accounts elsewhere \u2014 at \u201cunrelated\u201d third party services \u2014 stressing that its own security has not been compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n

And so we close with Edward Snowden\u2019s \u201cprivacy tips<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026on an individual level, people should seek out encrypted tools and stop using services that are \u201chostile to privacy.\u201d For one thing, he said you should \u201cget rid of Dropbox,\u201d because it doesn\u2019t support encryption..\u201d<\/p>\n

All of the above (and the iCloud\/naked celebrities fiasco) were about consumers\u2019 use of the cloud. But ultimately, consumers are your employees. And if they are willing to play fast and loose with THEIR files, what are they doing with yours?<\/p>\n

Leave your company files where they are, give your employees an easy way to access them and use your current data infrastructure to secure and track how they are syncing and sharing those files. Why wouldn\u2019t you?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
