Today, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio-today.com\/article\/index.php?story_id=013000F2K3PS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new study was published<\/a>\u00a0by HP Enterprise Security and Ponemon Institute \u2013 for the sixth year in a row \u2013 about the cost of a data breach in the US.\u00a0 Up 20% from last year, the total annual impact of a data breach on a US organization is $15 million.\u00a0 A single attack?\u00a0 Just $1.9 million. I don\u2019t know about you, but I can think of a lot better ways to spending that kind of money.<\/p>\n<p>The report points out the growing attack surface thanks to the expanding Internet of Things\u2026cloud, mobile, thermostats, etc.\u00a0 In a recent presentation by Gartner analyst John Girard, he spoke of hacks that originated through a lightbulb and gained access to all systems.\u00a0 The potential impact is the sort of stuff that can keep you from sleeping at night; I don\u2019t want to think about what else someone who can hack a system through a lightbulb can do!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe probability that you will experience a breach is steadily increasing, and so the return on investment for an appropriate security budget and leadership has continuously become more favorable,\u201d said Tim Erlin, director of IT security and risk strategy for advanced threat\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio-today.com\/accuserve\/accuserve-go.php?c=17061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protection<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0firm Tripwire. \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that avoiding a breach altogether is the best way to reduce its cost.
