ownCloud Android 2.12 Release \u2013 Sharing Rewrite<\/h1>\n

There is a new release for the ownCloud Android app! It brings performance improvements to Sharing. What does this mean for the user?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This release brings the first part of the architecture change which is ongoing at the app. David Gonzalez, Android app developer, just wrote a great\u00a0article about the new MVVM architecture<\/a>\u00a0of the app.<\/p>\n

The architecture improvements are completely under the hood; this means there is not much new to see in this release for users \u2013 except less error messages and waiting times of course!<\/p>\n

The Big Sharing Rewrite<\/h2>\n

Sharing is the first part of the app which follows the new architecture approach now. The whole part of the code which takes care of the sharing was rewritten to clean it up. Sometimes it\u2019s more fun to tear the whole house down and build it anew!<\/p>\n

This means that there are improvements in performance and stability. For example sharing files uses less RAM now, and opening the sharing view is faster. A quick measure how much faster it is:<\/p>\n

The rewrite<\/a>\u00a0brings a gradual change to the\u00a0Kotlin programming language<\/a>; Sharing is now written completely in Kotlin. Kotlin makes it easier for the community to contribute; it\u2019s also faster and more reliable than Java, leading to less crashes and other bugs.<\/p>\n

Apart from that, this release contains mostly bugfixes and small improvements \u2013 while the progress is mostly invisible to the user, David can write\u00a0more than 1500 words<\/a>\u00a0about what they changed under the hood. It\u2019s a big step!<\/p>\n
