ownCloud on Windows, Linux and Mac combines less CPU usage with performance improvements

Lexington, MA – June 5, 2014ownCloud, Inc., the company behind the world’s most popular open source file sync and share software, today released its latest desktop clients for Windows, Mac and Linux, featuring significant performance improvements in uploading and downloading data, as well as considerably lower CPU utilization.

With more than 1.6 million users worldwide, ownCloud offers the ease-of-use, flexibility, sophistication, privacy and security unmatched by consumer-grade apps. ownCloud installs easily on a web server, enabling customers to host their own file sync and share, using their own storage (or cloud storage they choose), instead of relying on third parties outside of their control.

ownCloud Desktop Clients enable users to connect desktops to private ownCloud servers, automatically syncing local folders with the ownCloud server, and keeping the contents of those folders synced across the user’s desktops and mobile devices – including files and folders shared by other users.

The ownCloud Desktop Client 1.6 significantly reduces CPU load by optimizing checks for changes in the local filesystem. 1.6 also provides a newly enhanced sync algorithm that enables the client to perform parallel simultaneous uploads and downloads especially optimized for future ownCloud server updates, dramatically reducing the time it takes to sync new or changed files. With these new additions, the client automatically detects the connected server version and specific sync scenario, selecting the appropriate approach based on the specific situation. For example, in situations where bandwidth limitations cancel out the advantage of parallel uploads and downloads, the client falls back on a single threaded sync algorithm.

“Our former desktop sync clients were solid, 1.6 makes them blazing fast – providing two way sync on par or faster than comparable clients,” said Matt Richards, VP Products, ownCloud. “Add to that the reduced CPU load and other fixes, 1.6 gives end users a terrific way to keep data in sync and quickly access what they need, when they need it, wherever they are located.”
