ocm photoToday GÉANT has announced, in collaboration with ownCloud, the achievement of OpenCloudMesh Project’s first key milestone. The accomplishment was reached during CERN’s Cloud Services for Synchronization and Sharing (CS3) workshop back in January, where OpenCloudMesh sharing between sync and share domains at the University Münster in Germany, the University Vienna in Austria, the national research and education networking (NREN) organization of Switzerland, SWITCH, and AARNet the NREN of Australia was demonstrated using ownCloud and Federated Cloud Sharing.

OCM is a collaborative effort between ownCloud, GÉANT , and CERN to define an open standard-based protocol. The goal is to take universal file access beyond the confinements of individual clouds by allowing users to connect to different clouds around the world, while maintaining the key benefits of being on-premises/hybrid deployments have to offer.

We are also pleased to announce that, with a framework agreement  with GÉANT, about 400,000 of their users now have access to the national or institutional sync and share services that have been built into our Enterprise Edition software.

While this is a great mile stone for the OCM project, there is still more work to be done.  Our next demonstration is planned be held this June at the TNC16 conference in Prague, so be sure not to miss it.
