The idea of a federated Cloud sharing is that everyone can use their local, on premise service but additionally these services are capable of communicating with each other across other servers and organizations. You can think about federated file sync and share working in a similar way as email. Everyone who wants to can have their own local email server to benefit from all the storage, speed and security advantages. Others might use a big hosted service like hotmail or gmail but it doesn´t matter if they have their own mail server or use email hosted by a provider; everyone can exchange, send and read email wherever it is coming from. The idea of a federated file sync and share service is similar.
This talk will cover the federation features of ownCloud 7 and the brand new improvements in ownCloud 8. I will also discuss the plans for the future, what to expect in the next 3-6 months and how to get involved.
