Great story from Steven Vaughn-Nichols on research from Gartner’s Tom Bittman showing a surge by businesses into the cloud, with many saying they will testing hybrid cloud models.
Writes Vaughn-Nichols:
“What’s different in the vision Bittman found in his crystal ball and what Gartner saw in 2010 is that business understands that the cloud is real. Looking ahead, Bittman sees hybrid clouds as the next step in industry cloud implementation.
“Bittman wrote, “Hybrid cloud computing is at the same place today that private cloud was three years ago ; actual deployments are low, aspirations are high, and nearly half of large enterprises will likely have hybrid cloud deployments by the end of 2017. ”
“Companies will be playing with the hybrid model, where both public and private clouds are used, well before 2017. Indeed, Bittman predicts that “nearly three-fourths of large enterprises will have hybrid deployments by 2015.”
This is exactly what we’re seeing as well. Many companies are starting to test the waters of public cloud, but don’t want to lose control of their data. So, they’ll keep their critical data on premises and put more public, less critical files in the cloud. When we tell them that they can control their data – even data in a public cloud – without creating additional silos or ramping up costs and complexities – we see many eyes widen and heads nod.
Public clouds bring nimbleness, potential cost savings, speed of deployment and ease of use and deployment – but they are fraught with security, privacy and availability concerns. Giving employees the same ease of use and flexibility, while giving IT control will enable businesses to enjoy the best of both worlds.
