Today we announced some very exciting news. The Indian government has chosen ownCloud to be part of the DigiLocker Project!
The idea behind DigiLocker is to provide every Indian citizen with a safe, digital storage space for all of their personal documents in the form of signed PDF files—birth certificates, drivers licenses, passports, etc. They are also allowed to add documents themselves to keep up-to-date. ownCloud was chosen for our File Access solution, which plays a major role in the architecture of the project. This means that the users can access their files from and device, including an Android App available in the Google Play Store.
Since deploying in July 2015, over 2 million Indians have connected to DigiLocker and the database holds almost 42 million documents! And over the next two years the government is hoping that at least 50 million citizens will connect. That is 50 million people using this ownCloud based project! Once the users are registered they have instant access to all the benefits ownCloud has to offer.
