ownCloud Teams Up With Security Research Community and Its Open Source Community As The Next Step In Its Ongoing Commitment to Stay Ahead of Vulnerabilities

Lexington, MA.—August 31, 2015ownCloud, Inc., the company behind the world’s most popular open source enterprise file sync and share (EFSS) software, Saturday announced the launch of the ownCloud Security Bug Bounty Program, adding an extra layer of security to the company’s flagship on-premise EFSS solution. ownCloud has partnered with HackerOne, the leading provider of vulnerability management and bug bounty platforms, to join forces with loyal and skilled ownCloud contributors and the security research community at large, to identify and resolve security vulnerabilities before they become problems.

While ownCloud has its own comprehensive security strategy, including in-house security professionals and regularly passing independent security audits and penetration tests to deliver enterprise-grade security capabilities, bug bounty programs are used by leading companies committed to bringing their security plan to the next level. These programs provide an incentive for individuals to responsibly disclose software bugs, centralize reporting streams, and ultimately allow security teams to leverage the external community to help keep users safe in today’s continuously evolving cyber threat landscape.

The most downloaded open source project for file sync and share, ownCloud is excited to honor its open source community of over 800 contributors by leveraging their expertise, in addition to that of the security research community, to add another layer to its overall security strategy. Depending on the severity of the bug, contributors flagging valid vulnerabilities will earn up to $500.

The ownCloud Security Bug Bounty Program was presented to the ownCloud community at this year’s record-breaking ownCloud Contributor Conference, which is taking place August 28 – September 3 in Berlin, Germany. The attendee list for the 2015 conference more than doubled the number of contributors who attended in 2014, from every geography worldwide. For two full days, attendees had nearly twice the presentations and talks to choose from compared to the previous year’s event, including coding, design, discussion, and workshops as well as the popular 5 day hackathon.
