End-to-End Encryption for ownCloud

Maximise security and control. End-to-End Encryption helps your organization exchange data with the highest security standards.

What is End-to-End Encryption and why does your organization need it?

You are working on a confidential contract and would like to get input from one of your colleagues. Corporate data protection policies require that the contract can only be read and edited by the two of you, and no one else has access to it, not even the IT administrator. How do you go about it?

With the ownCloud end-to-end encryption , you can share encrypted files with both internal and external users, with the option of sharing them via the ownCloud Outlook plugin, ensuring your data is met with utmost security, at all times.

Ensure maximum security for file storage and exchange

Exchanging data with ownCloud keeps your data secure. End-to-end encryption adds an additional security layer that makes sure that files can only be accessed by the intended users. Neither the administrator of the ownCloud Server nor unauthorized third parties can access the secured data. With the ownCloud end-to-end encryption plugin, you can benefit in the following ways:

  • User-controlled, secure data exchange and collaboration
  • Reduced risk for administrators as there’s no way to access the encrypted files
  • Encrypted data exchange with external users (using ownCloud guests app)
  • Convenient encrypted file collection from external users (Public Links with encrypted File Drop)
  • Outlook Plugin Integration to automatically share end-to-end-encrypted attachments via ownCloud, with no file size limits
  • Hardware key support for enhanced security by using smart cards or USB tokens

How does ownCloud End-to-End Encryption work?

Users can define encrypted spaces. All the files uploaded to these folders are encrypted on-the-fly by the browser. Encrypted spaces can be shared across users and groups dynamically adapting the encryption keys in the background.

The data is encrypted before it leaves the user’s workstation. Decryption takes place on the recipient’s workstation. Data is encrypted using state-of-the-art technology (AES-256 for files, RSA-2048 for file keys).

For every user, the plugin generates a “key pair” including a private key and a public key. The keys can be generated individually in the web browser or centrally by the administrator.

  • Public keys are distributed automatically via ownCloud
  • Private keys are in the users’ hands with different options (based on the end-to-end enryption key management option)
