Files Drop Feature is Now Available, Get Excited!

Posted by ownCloud GmbH – 5. May 2015

We are excited to announce our newest feature available for Enterprise users, the write only upload addition to ownCloud we call Files Drop. Files Drop is what it sounds like – anonymous users can now drag a file into the upload only interface and drop it, and the file will be uploaded to ownCloud. No fuss, no muss! This feature is available with our newest update , 8.0.3, launched today.

What does this mean? It means even more control of course! An admin has to enable this capability on ownCloud, and then a user sets a folder in their ownCloud file tree as the upload target. A unique tokenized URL is created for the user that the user can share with anyone that has a web browser. An anonymous person can go to the URL, drop a file into the web interface, and the file appears in the pre-defined path on the ownCloud server inside the user’s account. Since the anonymous person does not see the contents of the ownCloud directory, and the upload is managed by ownCloud’s security features like the file firewall, it provides an excellent and fast way to upload large files in a controlled and secure manner.

Who would use this? Well, there a quite a few use cases. The most popular is the FTP replacement. Say you had a large log file to upload to the support desk for one of your favorite network devices. The support desk can give you a URL, you drag the file into the browser at that URL, and the support person can immediately see the file and work with the logs.

Of course, don’t take our word for it. Give ownCloud a try by downloading the virtual appliance and see what you think. What other use cases can you think of?
