More flexibility for the two-factor authentication in ownCloud

Posted by Jonathan Kawohl – 4. May 2018

Today the privacyIDEA ownCloud app version 2.4 was released. Besides Configuration improvements, we included an important feature that makes it easier for the Administrator allows some users to be excluded from the two-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication or not?

The privacyIDEA ownCloud app activates enterprise-wide two-factor
Authentication for all users in ownCloud. The authentication is performed by the privacyIDEA server. In some cases, however, it can be interesting to grant certain users access to ownCloud without a second factor. If these users only existed locally in the ownCloud database, it was not easily possible, until now. With version 2.4, the administrator can now define ownCloud user groups that do not have to specify a second factor when logging in. This is interesting e.g. for Guest users who only have read access to less sensitive data. This simplifies workflows because the IT helpdesk does not have to issue a second factor to a simple, possibly temporary guest user.

In version 2.4 the configuration of the privacyIDEA ownCloud App was reworked. The setup of the app and connection to the own privacyIDEA system has been simplified. Test buttons are now available with which the administrator can test the configuration before activating it.
Furthermore, the German translation of the configuration dialog has been added.

About the privacyIDEA ownCloud App

The privacyIDEA ownCloud app extends an ownCloud installation with an enterprise-ready two-factor authentication. The privacyIDEA plugin forwards the second step of user registration to ownCloud to the authentication system privacyIDEA. There, the system administrator can centrally manage the second factors of the users and thus centrally control which user must log on and how. Users can log on to ownCloud thanks to privacyIDEA authentication methods such as key tokens, smartphone apps, SMS, email, Yubikey or U2F devices.

The privacyIDEA ownCloud App can be installed directly from the ownCloud Marketplace.
