ownCloud Certifies SUSE Enterprise Storage Ceph/S3 API for ownCloud Enterprise Edition

Nuremberg, October 31st, 2018: Today ownCloud announced SUSE Enterprise Storage Ceph/S3 API as a certified storage backend for its ownCloud Enterprise Edition. All functional and performance tests have passed successfully and the SUSE Ceph/S3 API has been added to ownCloud’s QA testing processes. As a result, the SUSE Enterprise Storage Ceph/S3 API will be continuously tested and regularly certified with future ownCloud Enterprise Edition releases.

SUSE Enterprise Storage provides a single unified software-defined storage cluster that provides applications with object, block and file storage that is designed with unlimited scalability – from terabytes to petabytes and beyond. Because there is no single point of failure, enterprises gain maximum system resiliency and application availability following hardware failures.

“SUSE Enterprise Storage delivers an intelligent, software-defined solution and provides IT organizations with a cost effective, easy-to-manage, flexible infrastructure with accelerated deployment times and increased life and reliability. We are pleased that this gives the many ownCloud users a strong option for transforming their organization,” said Larry Morris, Director of Product Management for SUSE Enterprise Storage at SUSE.

SUSE Ceph/S3 Storage integration reduces dependency on proprietary hardware by replacing an organization’s storage infrastructure with an open, unified and smarter software-defined storage solution. S3 significantly increases scalability, accelerates innovation and lowers costs.

The Ceph/S3 Object Gateway is an object storage interface built on top of librgw to provide applications with a RESTful gateway to Ceph Storage Clusters. Data is stored on intelligent object storage devices (OSDs), which automates data management tasks such as data distribution, data replication, failure detection and recovery. Ceph is both self-healing and self-managing, which results in a reduction of administrative and budget overhead.

“Especially for customers who operate very large ownCloud installations, the certification for SUSE S3 Enterprise Storage is good news. In times of ever-increasing data usage in companies, scalability is becoming a decisive factor and the S3 standard is an important technology in increasing it,” emphasizes Jörg Eberwein, Head Partner & Alliances at ownCloud.

Besides its support for Amazon S3 based storage backends, ownCloud has now officially added support for SUSE Enterprise Storage based backends connected via its Ceph/S3 API. This is recommended as both the primary and secondary storage services.

With this certification statement, all ownCloud customers who operate a storage infrastructure, which connects through a SUSE Enterprise Storage Ceph/S3 API to an ownCloud Enterprise Edition as object-based storage, will be entitled to ownCloud support services along with their agreed SLAs.
