Congratulations to Sciebo, the project which goes live at noon today, enabling universal file accees for employees, teachers and students at more than 20 universities in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Thanks to state funding, additional universities may follow which would result in 500,000 ownCloud users through this single project.

We have been collaborating closely with the consortium Management of University of Münster, and especially Dr. Vogl, Director of ZIV for many months. Congratulations to him and his team for today’s launch!

Sciebo is built on ownCloud Enterprise software which allows users to benefit from anytime, anywhere file sync and share functionality. This project contributed to the initial idea of ownCloud server-to-server sharing and has been further developed – as Federated Cloud project under the OpenCloudMesh initiative– as an API initiative for data access in distributed private clouds.

The implementation of the architecture is likened to large companies with many subsidiaries, globally distributed. Each university has its own ownCloud instance, distributed on three data centers.

iOS and Android applications, implementing the Sciebo design, are coming soon. Furthermore, the ownCloud Desktop Client has been enhanced and enables bi-directional sync of all files running on Windows, Mac or Linux.

Thanks to the extensibility and open source core of ownCloud, scientists and working groups can implement their own applications into ownCloud to simplify specific data handling. This allows creativity and collaboration across borders.

Enjoy using ownCloud!
