Thanks to our Community and our Users!

owncloud apple ios mobile appFollowing our launch last week of ownCloud 7 Enterprise Edition and the latest desktop app, we did a quick check and found that we had sold more than 250,000 mobile apps (Android and iOS) in the various app stores! Now, considering this does not include ownCloud Enterprise Edition customers, that’s an awful lot of ownCloud mobile apps out there.

To our quarter million mobile app users, we wanted to say thank you!

And what better way to show our community of users and developers our gratitude than to open the ownCloud iOS Mobile App for contributions, making the source code publicly available? Of course, we are still bound by Apple’s rules, but contributors can have the source code, compile their app and distribute it for use on their devices under Apple’s iOS Developer Program.

That’s right, the ownCloud Mobile App for iOS will now be available under a GPLv3 license.

Contributors will for the first time be able to contribute to development and testing of the iOS app, one of the more requested community “features”. The iOS and Android mobile libraries continue to be available under the MIT license, as they are today. The Android app, which is already available under GPL v2, will remain unchanged.
