Kerberos, a robust authentication protocol, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the security and convenience of enterprise systems. At the same time, by enabling single sign-on (SSO), it simplifies the login process and reduces the need for multiple password entries.
The Key to Secure Authentication in Windows Active Directory
Kerberos is the primary authentication protocol of Windows Active Directory (AD). It is being used to validate user and service identities in Windows environments. Kerberos operates by providing data confidentiality and in-depth security by using cryptographic keys for authentication and ticket granting. Moreover, it enhances network security and is indispensable for securing network communication and resource access.
Kerberos is a vital component in Web Authentication via Simple and Protected GSS-API Negotiation Mechanism (SPNEGO). SPNEGO uses Kerberos to securely verify a user’s identity when accessing web services. This combination enables single sign-on (SSO) for users, making it seamless and secure, as clients can access services without repeatedly entering their credentials.
ownCloud offers Kerberos support for ownCloud10 Enterprise customers.
Kerberos is supported in the Windows Network Drive app.
Furthermore, an app is available for streamlining user access and login for Kerberos/SPNEGO based Single Sign-On.
In summary, Kerberos support enhances efficiency and security in several ways, including:
- Streamlining user access
- Minimizing the need for repeated logins and password entries
- Ensuring a highly efficient workflow
- Introducing additional single sign-on (SSO) options
- Eliminating the necessity to store LDAP user credentials to access SMB/CIFS shares within your on-premises environment
