First Infinite Scale Sprint of 2023 improves Administration of Spaces

The ownCloud Infinite Scale January sprint review showed the fast development of Infinite Scale. The fact that Spaces administrators can now administrate Spaces without having access to the content itself is a huge step towards data protection and security rules needed for compliance in many scenarios.
Sprint review

In agile development, a sprint is defined as a certain time period (for example, a month or a fortnight) in which programmers add features and fixes to the code. One sprint follows the other, and each is concluded by a review meeting. This blog post is about the review meeting of the sprint that ran up to January 20, 2023, where ownCloud developers implemented several fixes and improvements, and many more are scheduled for near future.

Better Spaces management

In the latest version of ownCloud Infinite Scale, users will benefit from many changes in Spaces management, including an “administration settings” app that takes care of users and Spaces and delivers considerably better performance than prior solutions. The new settings dialogues show a unified look and feel in the admin panels, all entries for users, groups and Spaces now have context menus (the “three dots menu” shown in the figure above). Group and role assignments have been moved to the sidebar, and the drop-down search fields for groups will show only the groups the current user is not already assigned to.

Space management especially benefits from this development. The actions panels, quick action infos (displaying information about the Space in the sidebar) and the context menu have been newly added. Also, users are now able to select several Spaces. Administrators can manage Spaces without being able to see or edit their content – a feature very important, for example, when data protection rules have to be implemented, like the GDPR or when accessing HR files. Apart from that, the “Settings UI” has been removed (it was merged to the Profile page earlier) and theming is now also possible during runtime.

Improvements to clients

The Windows client has received an improved file lock handling (locked files are uploaded after, for example, Microsoft Word is closed). Moreover, Android clients can now list and browse Spaces, overall navigation has been smoothened and iOS clients like iPad and iPhone users are now also presented with the intuitive breadcrumb navigation.
