This year has turned out to be nearly as crazy as the previous one. But unlike 2020, this year we are holding our annual conference once again, of course in a virtual fashion. We are hyped about our recent developments at ownCloud, especially around ownCloud Infinite Scale. And we want to share our excitement with you! The conference will take place on the 27th and 28th of September. The lineup includes engineers and management from ownCloud, CERN, Collabora, ONLYOFFICE and VNC. Check out the agenda and RSVP!
Large storage collider
CERN is not only the largest particle physics lab in the world but also a long-standing ownCloud customer and valued partner. So we are excited to announce that the first production deployment of ownCloud Infinite Scale is now live at CERN! Available for a limited set of privileged users at first, the instance is connected to the actual production systems at CERN. So through ownCloud Infinite Scale, those users have access to the underlying data repository containing 1.4 billion files and 12 petabytes of data.
A safe island in the workstream
As workstream collaboration is all the rage nowadays, ask yourself: what about data security? Organizations can now provide staff with low-threshold access to their ownCloud directly in Microsoft Teams! Our brand-new integration allows documents to be shared and edited securely and conveniently within Microsoft Teams, with all ownCloud functions available in a Teams tab. For example, documents and folders can be shared securely via Teams without the actual data ever leaving your ownCloud. This way, shared files remain secure and access is traceable and auditable.
The ownCloud Desktop App 2.9 is here! It improves our Desktop Client for Windows, macOS and Linux in a number of ways, for example regarding its handling of OpenID Connect, OAuth and the Virtual File System. It now also features a dedicated language setting to customize the UI language beyond the system settings, and for Linux, the Desktop App is now also available as an AppImage package!
ownCloud Web is the new ownCloud browser interface that is fast, scalable and accessible – and works both with the upcoming ownCloud Infinite Scale and existing ownCloud 10 deployments. In the new version 4.0, ownCloud Web now comes with comprehensive ONLYOFFICE compatibility, a powerful search capability and a convenient context menu.
When using Collabora with ownCloud, users can now comment PDFs right within their online office suite!
With the ownCloud iOS App 11.7, users get comprehensive clipboard support to copy and paste files across Apps. It works both to and from the ownCloud App!
A healthy dose of security
When modernizing IT in healthcare, there are a lot of requirements: Systems have to be extra reliable, and personal data has to be kept extra safe. Open Source software has major advantages in that context and can provide a decisive contribution to sustainable change in healthcare.
And now, the geeky topics
For complex deployments, there are Docker containers. To orchestrate complex container setups, there is Kubernetes. And to deploy complex clusters with Kubernetes, there are Helm Charts. Now, there are official Helm Charts available for ownCloud – courtesy of our strategic partner VNC and their capable DevOps team. Thanks, VNC!
There are new repository URLs for the ownCloud Linux server. The ownCloud server complete packages are now available from repositories at software.opensuse.org, starting with 10.8!
The ownCloud Infinite Scale Tech Preview 1.11 brings security improvements for Docker deployments and a refined user interface that, among other things, enables users to move files and folders around using drag and drop.
ownCloud is looking for talent in a bunch of roles, among them front-end development, inside sales, pre-sales, technical account management, PHP development, marketing, cloud architecture and android development. Know someone? Please spread the word!
